What is World Braille Day?
World Braille Day on January 4 is the birthday of Louis Braille, born in France in 1809, who lost his sight as a child after an accident in his father's workshop. As a teenager at a school for blind children in Paris, he developed a reading and writing system of raised dots, arranged in cells of six, that can be read by touch. The UN first observed the day in 2019, and it highlights braille's role in education, independence and equal access to information.
