What is World Hijab Day?
World Hijab Day on February 1 was started in 2013 by Nazma Khan, a Bangladeshi-born New Yorker who wore a headscarf and faced prejudice for it after the September 11 attacks. It invites women of every faith and background to try wearing a hijab for a day, as a way to understand the experience of Muslim women who wear it. Supporters share photos and stories online and hold events at schools and universities, while others use the day to debate women's freedom to choose whether to cover or not.
