Saint Basil's Day
Generous as Basil, bright as New Year.
- Christian

When is Saint Basil's Day?
Every year on January 1.
What is Saint Basil's Day?
Saint Basil's Day on January 1 honours Basil the Great, the 4th-century bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, in today's Türkiye, remembered for his writings and for founding one of the first hospitals for the poor. In Greece and Cyprus he is the gift-bringer, Agios Vasilis, who arrives on New Year's Day. Families cut a vasilopita, a sweet bread or cake with a coin baked inside, and whoever finds the coin is said to have good luck for the year.
