Yennayer — Amazigh New Year
A new year, rooted in older soil.

When is Yennayer — Amazigh New Year?
Every year on January 12.
What is Yennayer — Amazigh New Year?
Yennayer, the Amazigh (Berber) New Year, is celebrated around January 12 and opens the year of the old agricultural calendar of North Africa. By a modern convention the Amazigh years are counted from 950 BCE, when the Berber king Sheshonq I took the throne of Egypt. It has been a public holiday in Algeria since 2018 and in Morocco since 2024, and families mark it with a couscous of seven vegetables, dried fruits and nuts, and wishes for a good harvest.
