Amazigh New Year (Morocco)

When is Amazigh New Year (Morocco)?

Every year on January 13.

What is Amazigh New Year (Morocco)?

Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, has been an official public holiday in Morocco since 2024, after King Mohammed VI announced the decision in 2023. It opens the year of the old North African agricultural calendar, counted by modern convention from 950 BCE, and is celebrated around January 13 and 14. Amazigh families mark it with a shared meal such as couscous with seven vegetables or a dish with a hidden date stone that brings luck to whoever finds it, along with music and wishes for a good harvest.
