Hogmanay

Auld Lang Syne.

Today
Hogmanay

When is Hogmanay?

Every year on December 31.

What is Hogmanay?

Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of the last day of the year, with roots in older midwinter festivities. After the Reformation the Church of Scotland discouraged Christmas as too Catholic, so for centuries New Year became Scotland's biggest winter holiday. Traditions include first-footing, when the first visitor after midnight brings coal, shortbread or whisky for luck, singing Robert Burns's Auld Lang Syne, and huge street parties, torchlight processions and fire festivals in Edinburgh and beyond.
