What is Transgender Day of Remembrance?
Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 honours transgender people who have been killed because of anti-trans hatred. It was started in 1999 by writer and activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil for Rita Hester, a Black trans woman murdered in Massachusetts in 1998 whose killing was never solved. Communities around the world gather for candlelight vigils where the names of those killed in the past year are read aloud.
