On November 1, 1954, the National Liberation Front (FLN) launched coordinated attacks across Algeria, beginning the war of independence against French rule. The war lasted nearly eight years, cost hundreds of thousands of lives and ended with independence in 1962. Revolution Day is a national holiday, marked with flag ceremonies, tributes to the martyrs and fireworks at midnight.
