Surva Mummers Festival
Mask the past. Dance the future.

When is Surva Mummers Festival?
From January 29 to January 31.
What is Surva Mummers Festival?
The Surva festival is held at the end of January in Pernik, Bulgaria, and has been an international festival of masquerade games since 1966. Thousands of mummers, known as survakari or kukeri, come from across Bulgaria and abroad wearing huge masks of fur, feathers and horns and heavy bells tied around their waists. Their noisy dances are meant to drive away evil spirits and bring health and a good harvest, and the Surova custom of the Pernik region is on UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
