What is Shichi-Go-San?
Shichi-Go-San, meaning seven-five-three, is a Japanese festival held around November 15 for girls aged three and seven and boys aged three and five. The custom dates back centuries to a time when many children did not survive early childhood, and families gave thanks at these ages. Children dress in kimono or formal clothes and visit Shinto shrines with their parents, and they receive chitose-ame, long red and white sweets symbolising a long life.
