Festival of Lemanjá
Offerings to the sea.

When is Festival of Lemanjá?
Every year on February 2.
What is Festival of Lemanjá?
The Festival of Iemanjá on February 2 honours the orixá of the sea in the Afro-Brazilian religions Candomblé and Umbanda, whose worship came to Brazil with enslaved Yoruba people from West Africa. Its best-known celebration is in the Rio Vermelho district of Salvador, Bahia, where fishermen and devotees have kept the tradition for generations. Dressed in white, crowds bring flowers, perfume, mirrors and combs to the shore, and boats carry baskets of offerings out to sea to ask Iemanjá for protection and a good catch.
