What is Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day on February 2 is a North American tradition in which a groundhog is said to forecast the end of winter: if it sees its shadow when it leaves its burrow, six more weeks of winter follow, and if not, spring comes early. The custom comes from German Candlemas weather lore, in which a badger or hedgehog played the role, brought to Pennsylvania by German immigrants; the town of Punxsutawney held its first official Groundhog Day in 1887. Thousands gather at Gobbler's Knob before dawn to hear Punxsutawney Phil's prediction, and the 1993 film Groundhog Day made the name a byword for living the same day over and over.
