What is Fall of the Berlin Wall?
On the evening of November 9, 1989, an East German official announced at a press conference that citizens could cross the border, apparently effective immediately. Crowds gathered at the checkpoints in Berlin until guards opened the gates, and people began climbing on the Wall and chipping pieces from it. The fall of the Wall opened the way to German reunification on October 3, 1990, and became a symbol of the end of the Cold War.
