What is Day of Reconciliation?
The Day of Reconciliation on December 16 has been a public holiday in South Africa since 1995, the first year of democracy after apartheid. The date carried opposite meanings before: Afrikaners marked it as the Day of the Vow, after the Battle of Blood River in 1838, while the liberation movement remembered it as the day its armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, was founded in 1961. By joining these histories into one day, the new South Africa chose to promote healing, national unity and an honest look at the past.
