Independence Day
Proud nation, free spirit.

When is Independence Day?
Every year on December 16.
What is Independence Day?
Kazakhstan's Independence Day on December 16 marks 1991, when Kazakhstan became the last Soviet republic to declare independence, days before the Soviet Union dissolved. The date also recalls the Jeltoqsan protests of December 1986 in Almaty, when young Kazakhs demonstrated against Moscow's appointment of a non-Kazakh party leader. The holiday is marked with official ceremonies, concerts, fireworks and flags in Astana, Almaty and across the country.
