What is World Turkic Language Family Day?
World Turkic Language Family Day on December 15 was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2025. The date marks December 15, 1893, when the Danish linguist Vilhelm Thomsen announced that he had deciphered the Orkhon inscriptions, 8th-century Old Turkic texts carved on stone monuments in Mongolia. Turkic languages, among them Turkish, Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkmen, Uyghur and Tatar, are spoken by more than 200 million people from the Balkans to Siberia.
