What is International Festival of the Sahara?
The International Festival of the Sahara is held each winter in Douz, a desert town in southern Tunisia known as the gateway to the Sahara. Begun as a camel festival in 1910, it is one of the oldest desert festivals in North Africa and celebrates the culture of the region's nomadic peoples. Over several days there are camel races, horsemanship displays, saluki hunting demonstrations, traditional weddings, poetry, music and crafts in the dunes.
