Survakari

Knock on the door, wish the year well.

Today
Survakari

When is Survakari?

From January 13 to January 14.

What is Survakari?

Survakari are the children and young people who perform survakane, a Bulgarian New Year custom of tapping relatives and neighbours on the back with a survachka, a cornel branch decorated with popcorn, dried fruit, coloured thread and coins. As they tap, they recite blessings for health, a rich harvest and a happy year, and are rewarded with treats or money. The custom is kept on New Year's Day, or in some regions on Vasilitsa, the old New Year in mid-January, and the cornel is chosen because it is the first tree to bloom in spring.
