St. Blaise's Day

When is St. Blaise's Day?

Every year on February 3.

What is St. Blaise's Day?

St Blaise's Day on February 3 honours Saint Blaise, a bishop of Sebaste in Armenia who, according to tradition, was martyred in the early 4th century. He is the patron saint of Dubrovnik, and the city's Festivity of Saint Blaise, inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009, fills the old town with flags, processions carrying his relics, the release of white doves and folk music. In Catholic churches elsewhere, priests bless throats with two crossed candles, recalling the story that Blaise saved a boy choking on a fish bone.
