What is Night of the Radishes?
The Night of the Radishes, La Noche de Rábanos, is held on December 23 in the main square of Oaxaca, Mexico. Since 1897, farmers and artisans have carved oversized radishes into elaborate scenes of nativity figures, saints, dancers, animals and local legends, competing for prizes. Because the carvings wilt within hours, crowds line up the same evening to see them, and the festival has become one of Oaxaca's best-loved Christmas traditions.
