What is Mardi Gras?
Mardi Gras is the centuries-old carnival celebration culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday, with the largest celebration held each year in New Orleans, Louisiana. The season officially begins on Twelfth Night (January 6) and runs until Fat Tuesday, featuring parades led by social clubs known as krewes, masquerade balls, brass band concerts, and the iconic purple, green, and gold colors. What began as a European pre-Lenten tradition has become one of America's most distinctive cultural celebrations, rooted deeply in New Orleans' French and Creole heritage.
