Iwo Jima Day
Uncommon valor was a common virtue.

When is Iwo Jima Day?
Every year on February 19.
What is Iwo Jima Day?
Iwo Jima Day, observed on February 19, marks the day in 1945 when the U.S. 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions came ashore on the volcanic island of Iwo Jima in one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War. Five days later, Joe Rosenthal photographed five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising a second American flag on Mount Suribachi — the image that won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize and became the model for the Marine Corps War Memorial near Arlington, dedicated by President Eisenhower in 1954. The day honours the more than 6,800 Americans who died taking the island.
