What is International Students' Day?
International Students' Day on November 17 recalls 1939, when Nazi forces stormed universities in Prague after student protests against the occupation of Czechoslovakia. Nine student leaders were executed, more than a thousand students were sent to concentration camps, and all Czech universities were closed until the end of the war. Fifty years later, on November 17, 1989, a student march in Prague began the Velvet Revolution, and the day now celebrates student activism and the right to education.
