Haitian Independence Day
Liberté. Égalité. Fraternité — and liberté for all.

When is Haitian Independence Day?
Every year on January 1.
What is Haitian Independence Day?
Haitian Independence Day on January 1 marks 1804, when Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the independence of Haiti after the only successful slave revolution in history. Former slaves led by Toussaint Louverture and then Dessalines defeated the armies of Napoleon's France, and Haiti became the first Black republic and the second independent nation in the Americas. Haitians celebrate by eating soup joumou, a pumpkin soup once forbidden to the enslaved, a tradition added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2021.
