What is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women?
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 was designated by the UN General Assembly in 1999. The date honours the Mirabal sisters, three political activists murdered in 1960 on the orders of the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. It opens the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, and governments, organisations and individuals mark it with orange lights, marches and calls to protect women and girls and end impunity.
