What is World Cancer Day?
World Cancer Day on February 4 is led by the Union for International Cancer Control and dates from the Charter of Paris against Cancer, signed at a world summit in Paris on February 4, 2000. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, yet a large share of cases can be prevented by avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, staying active and getting vaccinated against viruses such as HPV and hepatitis B. Hospitals, charities and governments use the day to promote screening and early diagnosis, to fight stigma and to call for fair access to treatment everywhere.
