What is World Arabic Language Day?
World Arabic Language Day on December 18 celebrates a language that shaped science, poetry and faith across three continents. Written from right to left in an alphabet of 28 letters, Arabic gave many languages words such as algebra, coffee, sugar and zero, and its script became one of the great art forms through calligraphy. Schools, museums and cultural centres mark the day with calligraphy workshops, poetry readings and talks on the language's many dialects.
