St. Stupid Day

Mock the serious. March the absurd.

Today
St. Stupid Day

When is St. Stupid Day?

Every year on April 1.

What is St. Stupid Day?

St. Stupid Day is the playful San Francisco holiday celebrated every April 1 with a costume parade through the Financial District, founded in 1979 by Ed Holmes — a.k.a. Bishop Joey of the First Church of the Last Laugh — and rooted in the city's deep tradition of political clowning from the San Francisco Mime Troupe. On weekday Aprils the parade starts at Embarcadero Plaza and winds through downtown; on weekend Aprils it begins at the Transamerica Building and climbs up Columbus. Participants dress in outlandish outfits, wave silly signs, toss pennies and confetti, and embrace the festival's central idea: that one of the unifying bonds in society is stupidity, and that mocking seriousness is its own form of honesty.
