When is Jazz Appreciation Month?

From April 1 to April 30.

What is Jazz Appreciation Month?

Jazz Appreciation Month — known as JAM — is the April-long celebration founded in 2001 by Smithsonian curator John Edward Hasse at the National Museum of American History, with an early boost from the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. The month honours the heritage of jazz, born in late-19th-century New Orleans from the interweaving of African folk, blues and ragtime, and the musicians who shaped it: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. April was chosen because so many jazz greats were born in it, including Ellington, Fitzgerald, Holiday and Herbie Hancock. Schools, libraries and concert halls across the country host listening parties, lectures and jam sessions, while the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra anchors the calendar with a weekend of concerts.
