What is Singles Day?
Singles Day on November 11 began as a joke among students at Chinese universities in the 1990s, chosen because 11/11 looks like four people standing alone. In 2009 the e-commerce company Alibaba began offering big discounts on the date, and it has since grown into the largest online shopping event in the world. Many people still mark it the original way, with gatherings of single friends, blind dates and a little self-celebration.
