Red Planet Day

The next world is red.

Today
Red Planet Day

When is Red Planet Day?

Every year on November 28.

What is Red Planet Day?

Red Planet Day on November 28 marks the launch of NASA's Mariner 4 in 1964, the first spacecraft to fly past Mars successfully. In July 1965 it sent back the first close-up pictures of another planet, showing a cratered, dry surface rather than the canals and vegetation some had imagined. Mars gets its red colour from iron oxide dust, and the day is a chance to follow today's rovers and orbiters or look for the planet in the night sky.
