What is St. Nicholas Day?
Nikolaustag on December 6 is the feast of Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop of Myra, in today's Türkiye, known for his secret gifts to the poor. On the evening of December 5, children in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other countries clean their boots and leave them outside the door. By morning Nikolaus has filled them with nuts, oranges, chocolate and small gifts, and in some regions he visits in person to ask whether the children have been good.
