What is St. Nicholas Day?
On the evening of December 5, children in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland place their boots outside the door. On the morning of December 6, St. Nicholas (Nikolaus) has filled them with sweets, nuts, and small gifts for good children — or left birch twigs for naughty ones. The tradition dates to the feast day of Saint Nicholas of Myra, patron saint of children, and is one of the most beloved winter customs in German-speaking countries.
