When is National Tango Day?

Every year on December 11.

What is National Tango Day?

National Tango Day in Argentina falls on December 11, the shared birthday of two tango legends: the singer Carlos Gardel, born in 1890, and the bandleader Julio De Caro, born in 1899. Tango was born in the late 19th century in the working-class neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, mixing African, European and local rhythms. UNESCO added it to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009, and on this day milongas, concerts and open-air dances fill the streets of Buenos Aires.
