Eid il-Burbara

When is Eid il-Burbara?

Every year on December 4.

What is Eid il-Burbara?

Eid il-Burbara, Saint Barbara's Day on December 4, is celebrated by Christians in Lebanon and parts of the Levant. Tradition says the young Barbara disguised herself to escape her father, who persecuted her for her faith, so children dress up in costumes and masks and go door to door singing for sweets. Families cook burbara, a dish of boiled wheat sweetened with sugar and spiced with anise, topped with pomegranate seeds and nuts, and bake qatayef and other sweets.
