What is Kwanzaa?
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African heritage held from December 26 to January 1, mainly by African Americans. It was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, and its name comes from a Swahili phrase meaning first fruits of the harvest. Each day honours one of seven principles, the Nguzo Saba, such as unity, self-determination and creativity, marked by lighting a candle on a seven-branched kinara, with a feast called karamu near the end.
