International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

When is International Day for the Abolition of Slavery?

Every year on December 2.

What is International Day for the Abolition of Slavery?

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on December 2 marks the adoption by the UN General Assembly in 1949 of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. Slavery is banned everywhere, yet the International Labour Organization estimates that around 50 million people live in modern slavery, through forced labour, forced marriage, debt bondage and human trafficking. The day calls for ending these practices and supporting the people who escape them.
