What is National Day?
UAE National Day on December 2 marks 1971, when six emirates united to form the United Arab Emirates under its first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan; Ras Al Khaimah joined early the following year. In a few decades the country grew from a small pearling and trading region into a global centre of trade, aviation and tourism. Celebrations include fireworks, parades, light shows and buildings decorated in the national colours.
