What is German Basic Law Day?
On May 23, 1949, the Basic Law (Grundgesetz) — the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany — was promulgated, laying the foundation for a democratic, federal state. Shaped by the lessons of the Nazi era, the Grundgesetz enshrines fundamental rights as inviolable and directly binding on all state authority. It is considered one of the most successful constitutions in history.
