What is World Techno Day?
World Techno Day on December 9 celebrates techno, the electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit in the 1980s. It was shaped by three friends from the Detroit suburb of Belleville, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, who blended funk, electro and European synth music into a sound built on drum machines and synthesisers. Techno later found a second home in Berlin's clubs after the fall of the Wall, and the day is marked with DJ sets and parties around the world.
