Abu Simbel Festival

When is Abu Simbel Festival?

Every year on February 22.

What is Abu Simbel Festival?

The Abu Simbel Festival marks the twice-yearly miracle carved into the southern Egyptian mountainside by Pharaoh Ramses II more than 3,000 years ago. On February 22 — the pharaoh's coronation anniversary — and October 22, the rising sun creeps down the long temple corridor and lights up the inner sanctuary, illuminating the statues of Ramses II, Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhty while leaving Ptah, god of the underworld, in shadow. After the temples were relocated in the 1960s to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, the alignment still works — and thousands gather each year to watch it.
