Honor Our LGBT Elders Day

When is Honor Our LGBT Elders Day?

Every year on May 16.

What is Honor Our LGBT Elders Day?

Honor Our LGBT Elders Day, observed on May 16, celebrates the lives, wisdom and contributions of older LGBTQ+ individuals who built the foundation for the rights and acceptance many enjoy today. The day was created in 2015 by Nate Sweeney, director of SAGE at Chase Brexton Health Care in Baltimore, to recognize that the pioneers who fought for queer rights — often without family, social or legal support — still face unique challenges as they age, including isolation, financial hardship and limited access to affirming healthcare. Observing the day can be as simple as a phone call, a handwritten note, a shared meal, or a donation to an organization that serves LGBT elders; documenting their stories so the next generation hears them is one of its most lasting acts.

How to celebrate

Mark the day with a poster made in Dayfeed — pick your favourite photo as the background, share it to your story or group chat, and set a reminder so you never miss it next year.
