What is Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales?
The Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales on December 10 is a day of remembrance for whales killed by hunting, pollution, fishing nets and ship strikes. It echoes old traditions in coastal communities in Japan and elsewhere, where people built memorials and held services for the whales they relied on. People mark the day with art, beach clean-ups, documentaries and support for groups working to protect whales and the oceans.
