World Whale Day

When is World Whale Day?

Every year on February 17.

What is World Whale Day?

World Whale Day, observed on the third Sunday of February, was founded in Maui in 1980 by Greg Kauffman of the Pacific Whale Foundation to raise awareness for humpback whales then facing extinction. Each year the islands off Lahaina host parades, chant competitions and ocean clean-ups that bring together the Pacific Islands humpback population, the local community and visitors. The day anchors a wider conservation conversation about commercial whaling, ocean noise, ship strikes and the slow recovery of great whale species since the 1986 moratorium.
