World Basketball Day on December 21 was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2023. The date marks December 21, 1891, when James Naismith's students played the first game of basketball at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, shooting at peach baskets nailed to a balcony. Today basketball is played by hundreds of millions of people in almost every country, and the day celebrates the sport's power to bring people together, from street courts to the Olympics.
