International Day of the Seafarer, observed on June 25, honors the nearly 1.9 million merchant seafarers who keep global trade moving — carrying roughly 80% of world merchandise by sea. Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010 and first observed in 2011, the day shines a light on seafarers' rights, mental health, and the often invisible sacrifices of those who spend months away from family on the open ocean.
