What is Yi Peng Lantern Festival?
Yi Peng is the lantern festival of northern Thailand, held on the full moon of the second month of the old Lanna calendar, the same night as Loy Krathong. In Chiang Mai and across the north, people release khom loi, paper lanterns lifted by a small flame, so that thousands of lights drift up into the night sky. Each lantern is said to carry away misfortune and bring good luck for the year ahead, and temples hold ceremonies with candles and prayer.
