What is Venice Carnival?
The Carnival of Venice takes place in the weeks before Lent and is famous for its elaborate masks and 18th-century costumes. Its origins are often traced to celebrations of a Venetian victory over the Patriarch of Aquileia in 1162, and in the following centuries masks allowed people of every class to mix freely. Banned under Austrian rule and fading for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, it was revived in 1979, and today it opens with the Flight of the Angel from St Mark's Campanile and fills the city with masked balls and costume contests.
