What is Up Helly Aa?
Up Helly Aa is a fire festival held in Lerwick, in Scotland's Shetland Islands, on the last Tuesday of January. It grew out of rowdy 19th-century midwinter celebrations and took its Viking theme in the late 1800s, honouring the islands' Norse heritage. A squad dressed as Vikings, led by the Guizer Jarl, marches through the dark streets with around a thousand torchbearers, who then throw their torches into a full-size replica longship and burn it, before a night of parties in halls across the town.
