What is Tu BiShvat?
Tu BiShvat, the 15th of Shevat, marks the new year for trees in the Jewish calendar. Originating in the Mishnah for agricultural tithe purposes, it is now celebrated by planting trees, eating fruit — especially the seven species of the Land of Israel — and in modern Israel by schoolchildren planting saplings across the country. It also falls at the start of spring in the Mediterranean climate.
