What is The Washing of Bonfim?
The Washing of Bonfim, Lavagem do Bonfim, is held in Salvador, Bahia, on the second Thursday of January. Hundreds of thousands of people follow a procession of about eight kilometres to the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, led by baianas in white lace dresses carrying vases of scented water, which they pour over the church steps. The ritual blends Catholic devotion with Candomblé, in which the Lord of Bonfim is associated with the orixá Oxalá, and is part of Brazil's recognised cultural heritage.
